VP8 is definitely better compression-wise than Theora and Dirac, so if its claim to being patent-free does stand up, it’s an upgrade with regard to patent-free video formats.

I don’t know what any of this means, but I think this guy generally knows what he’s talking about. It will be interesting to see if there are any patent issues in the near future for VP8. I don’t see it replacing h264 anytime soon, though.
